Alternate hierarchy refers to a situation where a single entity can have multiple parents and contribute differently to each parent. To accomplish this, the alternate hierarchy has shared members that refer to non-shared members of base hierarchies. When this option is enabled, you can identify a custom rollup for each level of the hierarchy. For example, with employee data, you can have data for different years. Year 1 is a parent of Year 2, and Year 2 is the parent of Year 3. When you select this option, the cube semantic model does calculations to support the alternate hierarchy when it is compiled.

  1. From the Toolbox, click Semantic Models.

  2. Select the semantic model (and dimension > hierarchy) for which you want to define an alternate hierarchy or add a new semantic model.

    1. Click the Actions menu ( ⋮ at the top of the Semantic Models column.

    2. Click Add Semantic Models.

    3. Enter a name for the semantic model.

    4. Select a Relationship from the list and click Add.
      You can enter a term in the search box to quickly find a name.

    5. Add a hierarchy and view in the Dimensions column. You will see the Hierarchy Properties properties on the right side of the pagepane.

  3. In the Hierarchy Properties, select the Has alternate path checkbox to indicate that there are shared members within other hierarchies. 

  4. Click Save to save your changes.
