See the topic Validating an object to learn the basics about validation.

Some validation issues give you the option to update the semantic model. When you view the validation error details, you can click the Update semantic model item. After the semantic model updates, validate it again, and it should be valid.

If you remove a file in the Dataset Relationship Designer and replace it with one using the same name and field names, you will need to update the semantic model before the semantic model validates.

To validate a semantic model, perform the following steps.

  1. View the semantic model using the Design tab.
  2. For already processed semantic models, Kyvos automatically runs a validation as soon as you make any changes to the design and displays warnings and errors (if any). For example, in this case, we have added a new measure. The system automatically generates an alert for validation before saving.
  3. To validate design changes and their impact on subsequent processes, click the link provided in the alert.
  4. Alternatively, click the menu and select Validate.
  5. Here you can choose any of the following validation types:
    1. Validate design and its impact on subsequent builds
    2. Validate design only
  6. Click Validate.
The system runs a validation check and displays the status. In case the changes have an impact on the subsequent build, the system also provides you the option to revert the design changes using the corresponding link. Use the Revert design link to revert your changes using the manage build instances feature.

Error when Design is valid, but the change impacts subsequent builds.

Error when Design is invalid, and the change impacts subsequent builds.

Tips

  • The semantic model will be invalid if any measure doesn’t have a valid relationship with any of the dimensions, or if any dimension doesn’t have a valid relationship with any of the measures.
  • If a semantic model is invalid, the error message indicates the dimension or measure name and suggests that where you need to make design changes. In this case, your semantic model process would fail.
  • In the case of design-related warnings, a warning message is displayed. You can view the details for the issues in semantic model design. In most cases, you will be allowed to proceed with the design and semantic model process. However, it may result in inconsistencies and data accuracy issues later.
  • It is recommended to resolve errors and warnings before scheduling a semantic model process job.
