You can define additional properties of a member in a level or attribute. These properties allow you to do analysis based on additional information of dimension members. These properties are referred to as user-defined member properties. For example, the Parts level may include SKU, SRP, Weight, and Volume properties for each product. These properties contain additional information about members at the Product level.
These properties can be viewed in visualizations and can be used in MDX expressions of calculated members as well as in calculated measures for analysis.
For example, if you have a dimension of Part, you can add supplier and location as member properties.
You can also specify which of the user-defined properties are shown when using a worksheet. The list of available properties is defined when you create the semantic model.
To define user-defined member properties, perform the following steps.
- From Toolbox, select Semantic Models.
- Select a semantic model from the Semantic Models column.
- Navigate to the hierarchy level or attribute where you want to add a user-defined property and select it.
- In the Properties pane, click the Member Properties field to view the list of fields properties populated from the relationships created for the semantic model.
- You may need to expand the selection to find the level or attribute you seek or type a name into Search at the bottom of the list.
- Select the field names you want to add.
- Click Settings to edit the list and use the plus or minus options to add or remove items.
- Click the indicator next to the minus icon to drag the items in the Edit Member Properties dialog box to change the order used in visualizations.
To see user-defined member properties in a worksheet, perform the following steps:
- From Toolbox, select Workbooks.
- Open a worksheet that you want to use.
- Add a dimension level or attribute that has user-defined properties on an axis.
- Right-click the item in the left pane and choose Select Data Properties, then select which user-defined properties you want to see and click Apply.
- When you select an item in the chart that has user-defined member properties, right-click and choose Show Data Properties.
- When you hover over data points, you'll see a property box displaying the member properties.
