This section describes how to use the features common to most if not all, chart types. When configuring a chart, the available options vary based on the data you are using.

In case there is any error in rendering data or any other warning, you will see an alert icon on the chart in both Design and View modes.
To create a chart, perform the following steps:
- From the Toolbox, select Workbooks , then select a workbook.
- Click Add to the upper right of the page and click Worksheet.
- Enter a name for the worksheet.
- Select a semantic model from the list. Or, type into the Search textbox to quickly locate the semantic model you want to use.
- Click Add.
- If needed, click the View workspace icon and select the Design workspace.
- Optionally, click the View Type option to see a list of chart types.
- Select a chart type from the list.
By default, the card size is set according to the chart type. You can resize and change the chart type later. - The name changes to reflect the current chart type selected. See Chart types.
- Select a chart type from the list.
To configure the chart, perform the following steps:
- Click the arrows next to the Dimension names to navigate the hierarchy and view members.
Or, type a level name into the Search box to quickly locate a member. - Drag a dimension into the X-Axis or Y-Axis list.
You can also double-click dimensions or measures to add them. - To remove a dimension, drag it from the axis list back to the Dimension list.
Or, right-click the dimension in the axis list and click Delete. - Click the arrows next to the Measures to navigate and view members.
Or, type a measure into the Search box to quickly locate a measure.- Drag a measure to the chosen axis list.
- To remove a measure, drag it from the Axis list back to the Measure list.
Or, right-click the measure in the axis list and choose Delete. - To set the color, drag a dimension to the Color list.
- To set the size, drag a measure to the Size list.
- To set the detail, drag a measure to the Detail list.
- To set conditional highlighting, drag a measure to the Highlight list.

If you are working with raw data, some of the chart configuration options are disabled. See Working with non-materialized or raw data semantic models.
Chart properties
You can toggle between viewing the worksheet and chart properties. The chart properties vary based on the type of chart you are viewing and are discussed in other topics in this section.
To set properties, perform the following steps:
- Click the arrow at the top of the Properties pane to switch between Worksheet properties and properties for the type of chart you are viewing, for example, Bar.
- You can make selections based on the type of chart you are viewing. If a property applies to other chart types, it will persist when you switch to that chart type.
- If the chart type supports templates for defining the appearance, for example, KPI, you can select a template from the list. If you choose the None template, you can then click Customize Design to view the rich text editor and customize the appearance of the chart.
