Using cascading filters

Applies to: Kyvos Enterprise  Kyvos Cloud (SaaS on AWS) Kyvos AWS Marketplace

Kyvos Azure Marketplace   Kyvos GCP Marketplace Kyvos Single Node Installation (Kyvos SNI)

Kyvos supports cascading filters that allow you to choose filter values relevant to your analysis.  When you specify a value for the first filter, the filter values of the next filter automatically get updated based on the value selected in the first filter. As a result, irrelevant values are automatically filtered out, displaying only relevant values in the filter listing and preventing any absurd selections. This behavior can be dynamically controlled according to your requirements by using the following options:

  • All Values: This option will display all values in the semantic model.

  • Relevant values: This option will update the filter listing of the current filter attribute with respect to the filter value selections of all the filters present on that particular sheet. For instance, if there are three filters for Country, Location, and City on the worksheet, and Country is set to 'India' and 'Location' is set to 'Lotus Temple,' then using this option, the filter listing of 'City' will only display 'Delhi.' The value 'Delhi' is based on the selected values from both filters.

  • Relevant values within Hierarchy: This option will show the filter values fetched based on the filters belonging to the same hierarchy level.

Notes

  • The cascading filter applies to both worksheets and Dashboards.

  • You can change the filter value at any time, and the filter will be automatically updated according to the selected value. For example, if you change the filter value from 'India' to 'USA,' the 'State' filter value will be updated according to the selected filter (USA).

  • By default, filters of different filter cards on the dashboard are not utilized to fetch relevant values. However, if you want to use filters of different filter cards to fetch the relevant values, in this case, you must link the cards. To do this, Click the Actions menu (...) on the source filter card (the one whose filter value selection should update the filter listings of other filter cards), and then select Link Cards. See the Linking cards section for more details.

To use cascading filters, perform the following steps.

  1. From the Toolbox, select Workbooks, then select a workbook and worksheet.

  2. In the  Filter  pane, under  Dimensions, click  Field, and navigate the dimensions to select an item.
The criteria are populated based on the field you select.  Click it to select different criteria.

  3. Click  Value.

  4. Select one or more specific values to filter criteria.

Select the cascading filters option and select the required option to display the relevant values for that filter.
The following worksheet illustrates cascading filters.

The following dashboard illustrates cascading filters.

Inheriting dimension filter

The cascading filter options are also available when adding conditions to filter values using the Adding Conditions dialog box. See the Filtering data in the worksheets section for more details.

When you inherit the dimension filters, they will be used to fetch relevant values.

After selecting this option, the filter values will be included when applying conditions to the filter values list.

Excluding filters from relevant values

To exclude a filter from the filtering process of relevant values, click the Actions items (horizontal three dots), and then select Exclude filter while fetching relevant values.

The filter will be excluded from the relevant values. You can exclude filter values on both worksheets and Dashboards.

Enabling or disabling action filters from relevant values

You can also enable or disable action filters to get relevant values. See the Adding actions to worksheets section for more details.

To enable or disable action filters for relevant values, perform the following steps.

  1. Open the worksheet that contains the Action filter in the Design mode.

  2. In the Filter pane, c lick the Actions menu (horizontal three dots) adjacent to Filter, and then select Include action filters while fetching relevant values > Enable . This will enable and include the action filter in the cascading filter to get relevant values.

Conversely, select the Disable option; the action filters will not be included in the relevant filters.
